My dear Selina I duly rec'd your most acceptable and most affectionate letter yesterday which gave me much joy - It was the representative of your dear self and carried me over all the hills and vallies which separated me from your embrace. O that I could as easily transport my body as I can my soul to my dear half that I left behind me. But my dear this discipline is necessary for you and for me, and i submit to it with the more cheerfulness. I am almost exclusively confined to the company of Gentlemen Except that I am invited to a great many parties when I am reminded of my own dear helpmeet when I see those of others - I am however a favorite with your sex everywhere - I still tell the ladies when there is a division of the house I am with them, on all questions, and therefore they all claim me on their side. I am just now returned from a visit to a party of ladies and gentlemen, and have three invitations for tomorrow evening. I preach in all these little societies for I generally get the control of all the meetings. I am therefore in point of company indulged in the evenings with all, and more than I could wish. But then I am reminded that there is no one into whose ear I can whisper one word of love, or upon whose bosom I can lay my head - or my hand - Well well I have one heart that is wedded to mine, and I trust I shall some day find the way home. I expect we will have a long session. ---- We have splendid oratory and long debates on both sides of the one great question whether man with wealth or man alone shall be the basis of government. I do not know that I have ever seen so many great men assembled together before. But I find myself much more at home amongst them now than I did at first. They all know me from the East and West and they all watch my movements with a jealous eye. I hope to profit in many respects from this meeting. It will give me a new kind of Education and introduce me to a new acquaintance both of which will be profitable to me and I hope to some of them. With regard to home concerns I wish you my dear to have Joseph Briant or Joseph Carbajal to engage at least 1000 lbs of pork, to be delivered to you, at the market price - to be paid when I return or by you as the case may be. perhaps Mr Counselman can spare it: or may be John Archer I recd. a letter from Elisa a few days ago - and am glad to hear that the blister behind her neck is aiding her eyes. ---- I would be glad that in your next you would inform me what amount of money has been rec'd since my departure from home, as I want to make some arrangements concerning the payment of some dues. I wish to know the amount of cash on hand, also to know whether Mr. Sims of Cincinatti ever acknowledged the receipt of 200 dollars I sent him from Wheeling in September last. I wish to know if John C. Ashley has acknowledged the receipt of the Debate and to tell Joseph if he have heard of the receipt of it to send the balance of the sheets to Cincinatti to those printers - Tell him to write to J. C. Ashley to send off the books as fast as he can to Cincinatti, and to other places down the country - and especially to Wilmington, Clinton Co. and Indiana generally. Let Joseph also from ville dispatch such orders as Ashley does not have book to fill - give strict to Ashley to supply a certain amount of subscribers. My love to all the children and to all the household, not forgetting Edw in particular. ---- And I need not tell you my dear, that I send my love to you for I keep it here; - But I commend you all to the protection and blessing of the God of Abraham and may he watch over you all and grant us an happy meeting Your ever
