Timeline
Make a timeline for writing and publication schedules. You need a goal; even if it does need to be altered in order to move the project along.
Pinpoint when a church history would be needed. Anniversaries are good target dates in multiples of 25: 25, 50, 75, 100. Allow two to four years for the project depending on its size and depth.
